The Kennett Square Inn is a historic restaurant and tavern, in the heart of Historic Kennett Square, dates back to 1835. From 1927 to l933 (Prohibition), the Inn became known as "The Green Gate Tea Room."
Since then, with several major renovations, it has continued as both a formal dining room, with a colonial tavern several steps down. The environment retains the sense of history and warmth of a historic space, while serving first-class meals at lunch and dinner at excellent prices in a fine dining atmosphere.
They offer a fun outdoor cocktails and dining space facing State Street on their terrace, to watch the world go by while relaxing with drinks and good food.
The way the restaurant is set up, guests can enjoy cocktails and appetizers in the tavern either at the bar or at round tables, and then move to the dining room for dinner. During the cooler months, the fireplace is burning, and the tablecloths and napkins are cloth.
There is a very nice selection of fine wines and craft beers, and the wait staff do a good job of unobtrusive and yet attentive service.
Proprietor Steve Warner is a key figure in Kennett Square's business community; and yet he is a truly modest man who produces creative and elegant dishes. I was pleased with the pricing and variety of appetizers just on the lunch menu.
For instance:
Oysters K.S.I. $12... 3 oysters stuffed with spinach & crab meat, topped w/ lobster sauce
Sautéed Exotic Mushrooms $8... blend of local mushrooms w/ brandy demi in puff pastry
Shiitake Tortellini $8... sautéed shiitake mushrooms & tortellini a garlic cream sauce
Crabby Portabella $11... portabella cap stuffed with a crab imperial finished with lobster cream
Shrimp LeJon $1 1...3 jumbo shrimp stuffed with horseradish wrapped in bacon
Blackened Sea Scallops $1 1... kiwi lime sauce, fresh fruit
Potato Skins $9... bacon, spinach, garlic cheddar sauce ... like no other
Bruschetta $7... toasted French bread with goat cheese, mushroom tapenade, herb tomatoes
Crab meat or Shrimp Cocktail... $10
Steamed Littleneck Clams $10... white wine, shallots and garlic butter
A note from thecheapeater.com : Some of these appetizers are so rich and delicious (as well as well-priced!), they can serve as a meal with a salad or a cup of soup. Their mushroom soup comes in cups and bowls, and is truly the best I have had, with a touch of spirits in a creamy bisque, with loads of exotic mushrooms.
The entrees at dinner are both small plates and large plate entrees, with a nice variety from land and sea.
The desserts don't show on the menu, but the daily special whiteboard had about 7 selections, from vanilla-nutmeg ice cream to New York Cheesecake, to chocolate bourbon ice cream to creme brulee.
The Kennett Square Inn is a nice place to consider having an event at, and the owner will work with you on a set menu, whether it be a holiday celebration with appetizers and wine, a luncheon for a wedding or baby shower, or a dinner to celebrate with employees and team members. The main dining rooms seats up to 60 guests, the Tavern up to 30 guests, and the Terrace up to 10 guests. There is also the Library Room, which offers private seating for 25 guests.

NOTE: They are closed on Sunday, but OPEN on Monday! Sometimes it can be hard to find a fine dining restaurant open on Monday.
